Frequently Asked Questions: Hosting

What is hosting?
Hosting means that you found a home for your Web site on our Web servers, which are stored in a secure, climate controlled environment and are connected to the Internet via high speed data lines.

We can also help you register your U.S. Domain Name, which becomes your unique Web address. Having your own Domain Name suggests you have your own Web space, and since email can be addressed to your domain (e.g. www.yourname.com), you will not have to announce a new email address if you change Internet providers.

How do I transfer my domain name so that it points to ResponsiveWeb servers?
Go to your domain registrar and change your DNS to the following:

  Host Name Net IP Address
Primary NameServer:

ns1.responsiveweb.com

216.128.67.40

Secondary NameServer:

ns2.responsiveweb.com

216.128.67.39

Your changes should activate within 24-48 hours.

Will there be any banners/popups on my web site?
No.

What are my pop/smtp servers?
They are both mail.yourdomain.com.

What is propagation?
When a visitor types your domain name into their Web browser, their request is referred to a nameserver that indicates the physical location (the IP address) of your domain on the Internet. When your site location changes to a new IP address, or when a new domain name is added, nameservers around the world must be notified of the change. This process is referred to as propagation.

Propagation normally requires 24-48 hours. During this period, if you are transferring your domain, some nameservers will refer to the old location of your site and some to the new location. Therefore, a visitor accessing your site may be directed to either the old or new location. That's why it is best to cancel your old provider only after the internet has propagated and all requests to view your site are going to our servers.

What are ResponsiveWeb's Name Server Addresses?
Primary Server Hostname: ns1.responsiveweb.com
Secondary Server Hostname: ns2.responsiveweb.com

What platform or Operating System (OS) does ResponsiveWeb use?
ResponsiveWeb offers both NT and UNIX operating systems.  Click here to browse all plans.

Do I have unlimited access to update my pages?
Yes, you can edit your website any time day or night.

Can I run adult/pornographic Web sites on your server?
Yes, we do allow adult material on our servers.  Please contact our Sales Department for more details.

What do I need to use ResponsiveWeb Services?
All you need is a computer with an Internet Connection.  The only application you need is WS_FTP.  Please see below.

How long does it take to set up a new account?
ResponsiveWebwill have your account up within 24 hours. Once your account is activated, you will receive an email from ResponsiveWeb with your relevant account information.

What is FTP?
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a means by which you may transfer files from one computer to another. When you have an account with ResponsiveWeb, the two computers involved are your desktop and your ResponsiveWeb web server. In order to make use of your web hosting account with ResponsiveWeb you need to move your Web site files from your desktop to your ResponsiveWeb web server so that your site will be displayed live on the Internet. This process is called "uploading" files. At some time, you might also want to retrieve Web site files from your account at ResponsiveWeb and put them on your desktop computer to retain a back up copy of your site, for example. This process is called "downloading" your files.

FTP is also referred to as a software program, as you will need to obtain an FTP client and install it on your desktop to upload and download files to your ResponsiveWeb hosted Web site account.  Click here to download a free version of WS_FTP!

Why can't I login/upload with FTP?
If you receive an error that you cannot login, please double check that your FTP address is ftp.responsiveweb.com, and that your username and password are the same as you entered on the sign up form.  If you misplaced your account information, you may contact us to confirm account information.

If you receive a 550 Access denied error message when logged in and attempting to upload files, please contact us and we will be glad to assist you!

When can I publish to my Web site?
Once your account has been setup, we will send you an email.  When you recieve this email, you will know that your account is active. You will not be able to actually see the web site you uploaded to ResponsiveWeb until the InterNIC has finished registering or transferring your domain name.

If you use FrontPage access, then you will need to wait to upload your Website until Network Solutions (or the registrar that has registered your domain name) has finished registering or transferring your domain name. Only then can you upload and see your Website at its new host, ResponsiveWeb.

Why can't I see my Web site yet?
It takes the InterNIC between 24 and 72 hours to complete the registration of any new domain name. ResponsiveWeb fills out all required forms, and submits them, when your order is received. The InterNIC receives the new domain name information, updates their domain name database, then provides the updated DNS information for all of the Internet Service providers around the world. It could take 24-72 hours for your ISP to update its DNS servers with the new information. Until your ISP has updated its DNS records from the InterNIC, you may not be able to see or access your Web site. During this time, there is nothing ResponsiveWeb can do to speed up the process. If you have questions concerning the delay, you can call the InterNIC directly at (703) 742-4777, Monday through Friday, 7:00AM to 9:00PM, Eastern Time if you have domain name questions.

Will I have 24 hour, 7 day a week access to update my Web site?
Yes. ResponsiveWeb provides you with unlimited access to update and make changes to your Web site via FTP or FrontPage 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

My FTP program keeps timing out or it can't establish a data socket, what could be wrong?
Check to make sure that your FTP program is not using PASSIVE mode.

What does a 404 error message mean?
This error message indicates that you are requesting a file or directory that does not exist on the web server. You might receive this message for the following reasons:

1) Mis-spelled file name or directory - check the URL that is entered to make sure that the file or directory name is spelled correctly.
2) Broken link - your html code is calling a file that does not exist where the code expects to find it. Make sure the URL in your browser corresponds exactly to the actual path to the file or directory on the server. For example, the URL might be:

http://www.yoursite.com/folder1/page.htm

But the file you are looking for called "page.htm" is actually in a folder called "folder2". Since your browser is looking in "folder1", you cannot see the file. This can be corrected by moving "page.htm" to "folder1", or by recoding your HTML so as to direct browsers to the proper folder, "folder2."

I have uploaded a new version of my site, but why do I still see the old version?
The changes that you make to your site should take place immediately after successful publishing. If you are making changes live on the Internet using FrontPage, the changes should take place within seconds. Any delay in displaying the new updates is either a result of:

a) an unsuccessful publish or

b) a proxy server at your ISP or office is using a cached copy of your Website.
You may check to see if your files have been successfully uploaded by logging directly into your account using FTP or FrontPage with your username and password. Once logged in, your remote directory will be displayed, showing the contents of your site on our server. Here you will be able verify if your files indeed have been uploaded.

It is always good idea to refresh or clear the cache on your browser when making changes to your Website, however you could also be viewing an old, or cached, copy of your Website via your connection either through your dial-up ISP or proxy server at work. Sometimes dial-up ISPs cache (store copies of), Websites on their proxy server so that an Internet connection does not need to be established each time a site is requested. This practice saves ISPs bandwidth, as Internet connection lines need not be used every time someone browses to Yahoo! - the site is simply stored locally on the proxy server. The same practice is often employed on a smaller scale at places of business. Caches should be cleared daily, however if your problem persists, please contact your dial-up ISP or your network administrator and ask them to manually clear the cache for your site. Once this is done you will see the newly published Website on our servers.

What does my homepage (first page of my site) need to be called?
In keeping with Internet standards, the first page of your Web site must be called one of the following: index.htm, default.htm or index.html.
