Essentially, POP and IMAP performs the same function, i.e. retrieve
e-mails from a remote e-mail server to your computer. IMAP gives you
more control, i.e. download/syncronize headers only, the entire message
etc., while POP only allows for download and delete (the entire
message). If you use multiple computers to check your e-mail, we
recommend that you setup an IMAP client. Otherwise, POP is faster
because all e-mails are stored locally in your computer. In general, you have a 10MB disk quota on our e-mail server. If you
are using POP, the default for most POP client is to download and delete
the message from the server. If you chose to save the message on the
server for some reason, you will need to be aware that if there are too
many messages on the server, you will need to remove them. If you are using IMAP, whatever messages you delete, you will need to
"expunge" them. Any messages that are deleted are also moved to the
Trash folder. Messages that are not expunged or in the Trash folder
counts towards the disk quota. If you have a lot of messages in the
Trash folder, you may want to delete those (and expunge them) as well.
If you need more disk quota on our mail server, please
contact us. We filter incoming e-mails based on the criteria published by
Open Relays Database
and SpamCop. You
can also built your own additional e-mail filter using
procmail. If you want this type of system to be installed on your dedicated
server, please contact us.
